Biography

The people of the 48th Senate District chose Darrel J. Aubertine to represent them in a Special Election held February 26, 2008. On Feb. 27, Sen. Aubertine took office as the first Democrat to represent the people of Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties in the New York State Senate since 1880. The Senator's record of working across party lines and his message resonated with the voters.

Sen. Aubertine and his wife Margaret live in Cape Vincent, NY and have raised three children, Erin, Paul and Timothy. Married in 1977, he and his family continue to run the Triple-A Aubertine Farm, a sixth generation heritage farm.

The Senator began his public service in 1994 as a member of the Cape Vincent Town Council before joining the newly formed Jefferson County Legislature in 1996, where he served three two-year terms. In his second term he was chosen by his fellow legislators to be chairman of the Legislature, though he was one of only three Democrats on the 15-member county board.

In November of 2002, Sen. Aubertine was elected to represent the 118th District in the New York State Assembly. Like his Senate victory in 2008, his election to the Assembly marked the first time a Democrat had served St. Lawrence County in the state Assembly since 1970 and the first time in Jefferson County since 1910.

As a member of the Assembly, he served on the Assembly's standing committees on Agriculture; Economic Development, Job Creation and Industry; Energy; Higher Education; Transportation; and the Legislative Commission on the Development of Rural Resources. In 2005, he was proud to join the Veterans Affairs Committee and be appointed Chairman of the Commission on State-Local Relations, and in 2006 he was named co-chair of the New York Coalition of Great Lakes Legislators.

As a member of the State Senate, Sen. Aubertine continued where he left off in the Assembly. He remains committed to working across party lines on behalf of his constituents and all of New York State. His is focused on ensuring that the voice of Central and Northern New Yorker is heard in the Capitol.  Sen. Aubertine is the ranking minority member of the Senate standing committee on Veterans, Homeland Security and Military Affairs, which is of special significance since his district includes Fort Drum, home of the 10th Mountain Division, our country's most deployed division. Sen. Aubertine is also a member of the committee on Agriculture, where his farming background provides insight in helping the region's primary industry. Additionally, he is a member of the Crime Victims and Correction Committee and the Elections Committee.

Sen. Aubertine has emerged in Albany as a leader on several issues, including agriculture and the St. Lawrence River. His top priority remains the improvement of the economy in Central and Northern New York. He knows the importance of tourism and agriculture, while recognizing that the key to turning our economy around is investing in education from pre-K through college.
