June 15, 2007The Honorable John E. PotterPostmaster GeneralUnited States Postal Service475 L’Enfant Plaza, SWWashington, D.C. 20260Dear Mr. Potter,I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your efforts in the issuance of the Purple Heart Stamp. For the past four years, Americans throughout the country have been able to express their pride in this nation and their respect for those that defend it by purchasing the stamp. I respectfully request that the United States Postal Service allow for these feelings of pride to continue by reissuing the Purple Heart Stamp has a "forever stamp." Certainly, this would be a small, but powerful way, to honor the sacrifices of our men and women in uniform. As was the case when the stamp was first issued back in May of 2003, our nation is at war and every little but of support we can lend to our troops is significant. The Purple Heart Stamp is especially significant to the region that I represent, as thousands of soldiers from Fort Drum’s 10th Mountain Division are currently deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan fighting the War on Terror. Many of the 10th soldiers have returned from overseas having earned the Purple Heart, as they put themselves in harm’s way to defend our country, protect their comrades, and bring peace to other nations. As Jim Randles, past National Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, once said, "the flag stamp is a symbol of our freedom but the Purple Heart Stamp is a symbol of the cost of freedom". The Military Order of the Purple Heart celebrates its 75th Anniversary this year, and I ask that you make the Purple Heart Stamp a "forever stamp." Thank you again for all you have done to honor our service members and for your consideration of this request. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely,Jim WrightState Senator
